Hackgate – our Watergate

Today MPs will get the opportunity to meet the Murdochs and Rebekah Brooks, the now ex-Chief Executive of News International. It is a scandal that has been brewing for perhaps years, and one which will surely one day become a major movie – a script written with all the ingredients that a thriller needs: lies, deceptions, “who knew what?” questions, and involvement from the highest levels. At first the practices of a rogue few were criticised, and then, as the story snowballed, it became clear that this was no longer a case of a rogue practice, but something much greater.

Just as Nixon declared “I am not a crook”, the Murdochs will have to do the same today. Every word will be listened to, analysed, and studied. In an affair that has already claimed two of the most senior police officers, two of the most trusted Captains of the Murdochs, and numerous others, one must ask: Who knew what and when? and, Who will be next?
