Do the dead outnumber the living?

Read an intriguing article on the bbc website. Arthur C Clarke famously declared in 2001: A space Odyssey, that for every person alive, there were 30 dead. He was spot on (well, the official ratio was 29:1, so very nearly spot on).

 

When the world’s population reached seven billion last year, there was an urban myth circulating that there were now more alive than had ever lived. The myth was a gross exageration.
