Bringing jobs back home

A number of times this blog has discussed the need to analyse the relative advantage of outsourcing jobs abroad, and the need to balance costs over quality, and savings over job losses. It seems the idea is picking up:

Equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. announced recently that it plans to relocate its Japanese facility back to the USA. The Ford Motor Company too is bringing its jobs back home from various locations, including China, Japan and Mexico.

Maybe one day Europe will catch up, and we will walk into a Zara, or any one of numerous clothing stores, try on a T-shirt, a pair of trousers, a shirt, some shoes, and see the Made in Spain/Made in UK / Made in Germany etc label. It’s a dream, but one which which would return jobs home, would provide people with an income, and in turn would turn employees into customers.
